Soddoma: Cantos of Ulysses is a travelogue of the grotesque. A linguistic equivalent of a painting by Hieronymus Bosch or Francis Bacon, it distorts, exaggerates and polarises the familiar world to such an extent that our senses are drawn inwards to escape the conflicts fashioned by such energies. As Mansel writes, ‘When confronted with conflict the mind re-enters the body. You are going where the smell is coming from’.
